The Institute of Advanced Studies (IAS) invited Zandile to become an IAS Residential Fellow at Loughborough University for July 2024. Zandile works in the field of archives, information, and knowledge management, currently serving as the Metadata and Photographic Archivist for the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory at the prestigious Nelson Mandela Foundation. Born and raised in Zola, a section of the Soweto township lying south of Johannesburg in Gauteng, South Africa, Zandile developed a strong passion for preserving and sharing people’s stories from an early age.
Zandile will continue her relationship with the Graphic Design Research Unit at Loughborough University, collaborating with Dr Robert Harland (Reader in Urban Graphic Heritage), and Dr Yolandi Burger, (Research Fellow). Her programme of activities will involve fieldwork at Nelson Mandela Park in Leicester to coincide with International Nelson Mandela Day, visiting the archive of the Anti-Apartheid Movement at the University of Oxford, engaging with the University’s Institutional Repository team, and researchers from the School of Design and Creative Arts and across the University.
Zandile’s visit extends ongoing collaboration between researchers at Loughborough University’s Graphic Design Research Unit into graphic heritage. Find out more about the work here.
